Two women in Sarasota have been arrested and are facing felony charges following a fight over a man that began over social media. The two women worked as caretakers at a local assisted living facility.

Kaylie Moya, 23, of Sarasota, was arguing with the victim via Instagram messages about a boyfriend at about 9:30 p.m. on Friday, January 20, 2023.

The victim, a 28-year-old woman, whose name is being withheld due to Marsy’s Law, shared with Sarasota Police detectives that she and Moya had been in an “on again, off again” relationship with their shared boyfriend for months. The victim claims to have messaged with the intention of coming to an agreement and putting the fighting over their shared boyfriend behind them. Moya allegedly became upset and felt she was being accused of stealing their shared boyfriend from the victim. This discussion was never resolved, and Moya stopped replying to messages.

Moya and Shakeria Mitchell, 27, of Palmetto, arrived at the victim’s home at about 11 p.m. The women yelled for the victim to come outside and fight. When the victim refused, Moya picked up a wheelbarrow planter and threw it at a window, breaking it. Moya kicked the front door in. The two women entered the home, and the victim fled to her bedroom for safety. Moya and Mitchell followed the victim. That’s when Moya started hitting and punching the woman and pulling her hair.

Moya turned her aggression towards the victim. Mitchell tried to intervene and get Moya to stop attacking the victim. Moya pinned the victim to the ground and choked her. As she feared for her life, the victim took her .380 firearm and fired a single shot at the ceiling. Moya and Mitchell tried to wrestle the gun out of her hands. Mitchell eventually got ahold of the firearm and then pistol-whipped the victim. A roommate called 911, and the suspects left the scene with the firearm and the victim’s cell phone.

Moya and Mitchell face Robbery, Theft of a Firearm, Armed Burglary felony charges, and Battery, a misdemeanor charge. Shakeria is out on bond, and Moya is in the Sarasota County Jail without bond.
