Chief Rex Troche was appointed Chief of Police for the Sarasota Police Department in April 2022. He leads a department of 190 sworn law enforcement officers and 61 civilian support personnel. Chief Troche promotes community policing initiatives and works in partnership with the community to build trust, transparency, and lasting relationships.

Chief Troche began his law enforcement career with the Largo Police Department in 1997 and joined the Sarasota Police Department in 2002.  During his tenure, he has been assigned to all four divisions within the agency (Patrol, Professional Standards, Criminal Investigations, and Support Services) as either an Officer or Supervisor. 

Chief Troche is a member of the Florida Police Chiefs Association (FPCA), Hispanic American Police Commanders Officers Association (HAPCOA), International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP), National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), and the Police Executive Research Forum (PERF).

 Criminal Investigations Division Patrol Division

The primary function of the Criminal Investigations Division is to conduct follow-up investigations of reported crimes. These investigations consist of interviewing suspects, victims and witnesses; analyzing information for validity, reliability and accuracy and compiling a comprehensive and factual case file to be presented in court.

The Patrol Division is operational twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. Uniformed officers of the Patrol Division respond to approximately 87,000 calls for service per year. The Division also contains the K-9, Traffic and Marine Units, as well as all Special Response Teams, the Homeless Outreach Team, the Crime Prevention Unit and the Volunteer Program. The Patrol Division is commanded by one captain and an Assistant Commander.

 Support Services Division  Professional Standards Division 

The Support Services Division is comprised of the critical infrastructure components of the Department that include the Body Worn Camera Program, Management Information Systems (MIS), Special Events and Extra-Duty, Facilities-Maintenance, Records Management, the Property Unit, Fleet, and the Red-Light Camera Program.

Additionally, all Special Response Teams fall under the purview of the Division. Those teams include SWAT, Crisis Negotiations, Emergency Response, Underwater Search and Recovery, and the Explosive Materials Unit.  

The Professional Standards Division is commanded by one captain and one assistant commander who holds the rank of Lieutenant. The Professional Standards Division oversees Internal Affairs, Accreditation, Recruiting and Backgrounds, and the Training Unit.
