Traffic stop leads to marijuana, cocaine, loaded firearm and ammunition

Post Date:09/11/2018 10:11 AM

SARASOTA, FL  – September 11, 2018   – 10 a.m.

Tory Mitchell, 20, of Palmadelia Avenue, Sarasota, has been arrested and charged with Possession of Cocaine (felony), Carrying a Concealed Firearm (felony), Possession of Marijuana under 20 grams (misdemeanor) and received a citation for a tint violation following a traffic stop on Saturday.

On Saturday, September 8, 2018 at approximately 12:30 a.m., Officers observed Mitchell traveling near the 3200 block of US 301 (North Washington Boulevard), Sarasota.  When the vehicle traveled in front of Officers, they noticed the window tint to be extremely dark.

As Officers approached the vehicle, they could immediately smell the odor or marijuana.  Officers told Mitchell they were stopping him for a possible tint violation but could smell marijuana coming from the vehicle.  During a search of the vehicle, Officers located a Taurus pistol with an extended magazine, a small bag of marijuana and crack cocaine.  The pistol was loaded with a bullet in the chamber.  The window tint was measured at 2%.  Legal tint is 28%.

Mitchell was arrested and transported to the Sarasota County Jail.  Mitchell has since bonded out of jail.

Since January 1, 2018, 135 firearms have been recovered by the Sarasota Police Department, including this case.  “To me, each of these firearms represent potentially one less loss of life or individually seriously injured,” said Chief Bernadette DiPino.  “The Sarasota Police Department is continuing to use innovated strategies to reduce violence in our community.”
