Credit Card Skimmer Located at Sarasota Gas Station

SARASOTA, FL  – September 19, 2018   – 8:30 a.m.

On September 13, 2018, a suspected skimming device was located on a gas pump at Citgo, located at 2201 Bee Ridge Road, Sarasota. 

Officers believe the device was installed on September 12, 2018 after the store was closed and was discovered on September 13, 2018 at 9 a.m.  The device was on Pump #1 from 6 a.m. until 9 a.m. before it was discovered by employees.  It was reported to Sarasota Police on Tuesday, September 18, 2018.  The device has been removed and collected as evidence.

Additional safety tips for customers to stay safe at fuel pumps:

  • Choose a fuel pump that is close to the entrance of the store.
  • Use a credit card for the transaction, not a debit card
  • Pay inside and use cash

The Sarasota Police Department is encouraging customers who may have recently purchased gas at Citgo, 2201 Bee Ridge Road, Sarasota, to pay close attention to bank accounts and look for any unknown transactions, regardless of how small they may be.  If anything seems suspicious, customers are encouraged to contact their bank immediately.
