Sarasota Police Captain Graduates from the F.B.I. National Academy

Post Date:09/24/2018 11:26 AM

On September 13, 2018, Sarasota Police Department Captain Lori Jaress successfully graduated from the 273rd Session of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s National Academy in Quantico, Virginia.  Captain Jaress returned to the Sarasota Police Department today.  She is the first female from the City of Sarasota to attend the prestigious academy.

The FBI National Academy is a 10-week professional course of study for U.S. and international law enforcement leaders that serves to improve the administration of justice in police departments and agencies at home and abroad and to raise law enforcement standards, knowledge, and cooperation worldwide.

Participation is by invitation only and attendees represent less than one percent of the law enforcement community.  Attendees are leaders and managers of state and local police, sheriff departments, military police organizations and federal law enforcement agencies.  Participants are chosen from every state in the union, from U.S. territories and from more than 160 international partner nations.

The mission of the academy is to support, promote and enhance the personal and professional development of law enforcement leaders by preparing them for complex, dynamic and contemporary challenges through innovative techniques, facilitating excellence in education and research and forging partnerships throughout the world.

During the academy, officers take undergraduate and/or graduate college courses at the FBI Academy located in Quantico, Virginia.  Courses include the following areas: law, behavioral science, forensic science, understanding terrorism/terrorist mindsets, leadership development, communication and health/fitness.  Officers participate in a wide range of leadership and specialized training and share ideas, techniques and experiences with each other, creating lifelong partnerships that span state and national lines.

“I’m honored and humbled to have the opportunity to attend the FBI National Academy and represent the City of Sarasota.  Only one percent of law enforcement executives have this opportunity,” said Captain Jaress.  “I’m excited to bring back my experiences and education to the Sarasota Police Department.”

Captain Jaress is a graduate from Venice High School and the University of South Florida.  She is currently the Commander of the Sarasota Police Department Support Services Division and is responsible for Fiscal, Payroll, Records Management, Management Information Services, Training, Building Maintenance, Recruiting and Backgrounds, and Property and Evidence.
