Shooting Under Investigation; No Injuries Reported

Post Date:04/23/2019 9:34 AM

The Sarasota Police Department is investigating a shooting that happened at approximately 8 p.m. in the 1900 block of 32nd Street, Sarasota, on Monday, April 22, 2019.  No injuries have been reported.

Officers were conducting proactive patrol in the area of 31st Street and Pershing Avenue when they heard 8 to 10 gunshots near the 1900 block of 32nd Street.  Immediately following the gunshots, Officers saw a vehicle traveling southbound on Gillespie Avenue at a high rate of speed.  Officers pulled behind the vehicle, during which time it pulled to the side of the road in the 2900 block of Gillespie Avenue.  Three juvenile males exited the vehicle and began walking away.  Officers were able to detain one of three juveniles for questioning.

“Last week we shared with our community that we would be increasing patrols in our north district after a spike in related gun incidents,” said Patrol Captain Demetri Konstantopoulos.  “Because of proactive patrols in the area, our Officers were nearby when this shooting happened, and they were able to take immediate action when they heard gunshots.”

Officers looked into the vehicle and observed what appeared to be two possible handguns and a possible long gun inside.  The vehicle was towed to the Sarasota Police Department and a search warrant on the vehicle will be conducted.

Following a preliminary investigation, an additional crime scene was found in the 1900 block of 32nd Street.  Officers learned that the three juveniles in the vehicle mentioned above and another vehicle may have engaged with each other with gunfire.  The shooting remains under investigation.

Anyone with information on this case is asked to call Detective Dan Riley at 941-954-7062 or leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers by calling 941-366-TIPS or online at www.sarasotacrimestoppers.com
