Sarasota Police to host Fair & Impartial Policing Seminar

Post Date:08/13/2019 11:12 AM

Chief Bernadette DiPino and members of the Sarasota Police Department will be hosting a 2-day training seminar this week titled Fair and Impartial Policing (FIP) on August 15th and August 16th at Sarasota Police Department Headquarters.  Chief DiPino and Command Staff members will be in attendance as well as community leaders.

The Fair and Impartial Policing training seminar curriculum will apply the modern science of bias to law enforcement.  Taught by Dr. Lorie Fridell, CEO of Fair and Impartial Policing, LLC, the curriculum will not only address racial/ethnic bias, but also biases based on other factors including gender, sexual orientation, religion, and socio-economic status.  The curriculum will also address various ways in which biases manifest, including implicit associations, attentional bias, confirmation bias and outgroup bias.  In October, this course will be attended by supervisors and officers within the Sarasota Police Department.  The course will train participants on the effect of implicit bias and give them the information and skills they need to reduce and manage their biases.

“It’s vital and important to sponsor a nationally recognized training seminar to facilitate continued community partnership building which ultimately leads to safer communities and quality policing,” said Chief DiPino.  “I believe bringing our community and the Sarasota Police Department together to discuss policy, training and outreach related to fair and impartial policing builds trust, accountability and understanding.”
